Visiting Alaska

Alaska, from Ketchikan, Juneau, the state capital to Anchorage, the largest city, is enjoying the glorious yet brief summer of the extreme Northwest. Ketchikan at the southern end of the inside passage, is called the salmon capital of the world and now is the time for fishing. Juneau, although it has more cars than people, is only accessible by water or air. The separation from the Lower 48 doesn't deter visitors, with tourism being an important part of Juneau's economy. Skagway, north of Juneau is also a popular tourist destination and common stop for cruise ships.

Anchorage, located in the South Central region of Alaska, is the most urban city in the state. Visitors can enjoy the bounty of local growers and artisans at the Anchorage Market & Festival. The market is held Saturday and Sunday May through the Labor Day. A great place to find local crafts, sample local foods, and enjoy live entertainment. There is a kid's market, so bring the entire family for a good time. The Best Western Golden Lion Hotel is an ideal location for visitors to Anchorage. Close to the airport and the University of Alaska, it is convenient for any of Anchorages events.

Anchorage hosts The 2010 Big Wild Life Runs August 15th. Six runs are featured at the event including Humpy's Marathon, a half marathon, marathon walk and relay and a kid's fun run. New this year, more downtown streets have been added to the course before heading out to the trails. Events for all ages and abilities along with fun race day entertainment make this a great day to gather family and friends to run and cheer each other on.

Palmer, just an hour north of Anchorage is home to the Alaska State Fair. The 2010 fair is August 26th through September 6th at the Alaska State Fairgrounds. A traditional family event where you can see the best agriculture, livestock, local goods and handicrafts exhibited. Enjoy the 4-H competitions, the giant cabbage weigh-off and of course the popular baby animals in the motherhood exhibits. Entertainment at the fair concerts this year is outstanding. Headliners include Kenny Rogers, Howie Mandel, Ricky Skaggs and Lonestar among a few.

The Best Western Lake Lucille Inn offers exceptional accommodations in the Palmer area. The hotel, in Wasilla, overlooks spectacular Lake Lucille and is less than ten miles from Palmer. Enjoy the best of Alaska experiences at the Alaska State Fair and exploring the nearby state parks.
