Visiting Alaska

Enjoy spring in the Last Frontier. Anchorage, a festive city if ever there was one, plays host to festivals and celebrations on a monthly basis. Alaska’s biggest city, Anchorage features the Fur Rendezvous Festival in February, the Tour of Anchorage in March, and the Alyeska Spring Carnival and Slush Cup come April. If you can’t make it to one of Alaska’s many beautiful state and national parks, then Anchorage is the place to be. Alongside Anchorage are cities like Seward and Valdez – two southeastern Alaskan towns just inland of the Gulf of Alaska. Take your time at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, or see what events Valdez has waiting for you – its all happening this spring in Alaska.

With great cities like Anchorage come great skiing, snowboarding, and dog sled racing. Happening in early March, the 2012 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is holding its ceremonial kickoff in downtown Anchorage. Rather be in the event? Check out the 2012 Tour of Anchorage – the 25th anniversary of this anticipated event. Ski your way through Anchorage on 50k, 40k, or 25k courses through the city. A premier amateur ski marathon, the Tour of Anchorage allows visitors and resident alike to ski across the city in early March – all apart of the American Ski Marathon Series.

Visiting in late April? Then don’t miss the Spring Carnival. Check out the KWHL Costume Contest on opening day, or the 34th Annual Taco Bell Slush Cup that Saturday. Cheer on your favorite competitor this spring in at the Alyeska Resort, and get toasty at the Best Western hotel in Anchorage.

Head south to Seward, and spend your spring exploring the Kenai Fjords National Park, or grab a fishing pole and kick off your spring with some Pacific Halibut fishing come March. For a little background on the area, check out the Seward Museum, or for those living the life aquatic, explore the Alaska SeaLife Center – open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take advantage of the behind-the-scene tour of the Alaska SeaLife Center, or go the extra mile and sign up for the puffin or octopus encounter – an interactive opportunity to meet the center’s tenants. Visit your new sea lion, giant octopus and penguin friends at the Alaska SeaLife Center, and enjoy your stay at the Best Western hotel in Seward.

Found just outside the Chugach National Forest, the city of Valdez features even more spring time fun in southeastern Alaska. Don’t let the heat out when exploring the Valdez Museum & Historical Archive, or embrace the chilly air with some snowmobiling, cross country skiing, or the Frosty Fever Winter Carnival. Happening from late March through early April, the Frosty Fever Winter Carnival is a great way to greet the incoming spring, right there along with Valdez’s Kite Boarding Festival and Polar Bear Splash In events. Find your favorite chilly activity in in town, and defrost at the Best Western hotel in Valdez.
