Alaska - Big, Wild, Free... and soon freezing. As autumn descends into the Alaska northland, snow creeps down the mountains leading the way for winter. Believe it or not, winter is the busy season in Alaska. Fly into Ted Steven's Anchorage International Airport on a visit to Anchorage, Alaska's largest City, and the hub for central Alaska. From there take the Glenn Highway northeast to Fairbanks or head south to the Kenai Peninsula via the Seward Highway.
Ski the slopes of Alyeska outside Anchorage, discover winter's Northern Lights in Fairbanks, or drive up to the Menedenahll Glacier outside Juneau - you'll be awed by Alaska's natural wonders. With great cities like Anchorage come great skiing, snowboarding, and dog sled racing. Happening in early March, the 2012 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is holding its ceremonial kickoff in downtown Anchorage. Rather be in the event? Check out the 2012 Tour of Anchorage – the 25th anniversary of this anticipated event. Ski your way through Anchorage on 50k, 40k, or 25k courses through the city. A premier amateur ski marathon, the Tour of Anchorage allows visitors and resident alike to ski across the city in early March – all apart of the American Ski Marathon Series.
