Known as the place where the road ends and the sea begins, the town of Homer is located on Kachemak Bay at the foot of the Kenai Mountains. One of the town's unique features is the Homer Spit, a narrow stretch of land that extends into the bay and features a port as well as a number of fishing and boat charters. The annual summer-long Jackpot Halibut Derby, one of Alaska's biggest fishing contests, is an event in which anglers buy tickets before trying for the biggest catch.
